Had an FHA Loan? A Free HUD List Shows If You Are Owed a Refund
If you ever had an FHA-insured mortgage, HUD may be holding a mortgage insurance refund with your name on it. Here is how to check for free this week.

There may be money waiting from an old FHA loan
When you had an FHA-insured mortgage, part of your payments went toward mortgage insurance. In some cases, HUD ends up owing that money back to the homeowner after the loan is paid off or refinanced.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) keeps a searchable list of borrowers who may be owed a refund. If your name is on it, the money is already yours. You just have to claim it.
This is not a loan, and it is not a scam. It is your own money that a federal agency is trying to return.
Who might be owed a refund
This applies to people who once had an FHA-insured home loan. FHA loans are backed by the government and are common for first-time buyers and moderate income families.
HUD says the refund process is for individuals requesting a premium refund on a previously owned FHA property. Some people received a HUD form (27050-B) in the mail directly from HUD.
Even if you never got a letter, it costs nothing to search the HUD list and see if your name comes up. Checking is free.
The official path is free, so watch out for middlemen
You do not need to pay anyone to check for or claim an FHA refund. HUD provides the search tool and the claim process at no cost.
Some private companies, sometimes called tracers, offer to find this money for a fee. You can do the exact same search yourself for free using the official HUD website.
OpenFinancial is not a bank and not a government agency. We just point you to the free, official place to look. Nobody can get your refund faster than the normal HUD process, so be careful with anyone who promises that.
