What changed, and what it means for you

On September 25, 2026, the IRS announced a new mobile app that replaces the older IRS2Go app. The new app is simply called the IRS app.

For years, IRS2Go let people check their refund status and find free filing help. The new app keeps those features and adds more. Now you can securely sign in and see your own account information right from your phone.

If you are waiting on a refund or want to keep an eye on your IRS account, this gives you an easy way to do it without a computer.

What you can do in the app

Once you sign in securely, the IRS app lets you do several things from one place. According to the IRS, you can:

Check your refund and amended return status. View your available balance. Make payments and review payment activity. View select notices and letters. Access tax records and transcripts. Manage certain profile and communication settings. And get your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).

The IRS says this is just the beginning and that more features will be added over time.

It is free, and it is official

The IRS app is free. You can get it through the Apple App Store or Google Play. If you already used IRS2Go and have automatic updates turned on, your phone will update to the new app on its own. You do not need to download a separate app.

The app does not replace IRS.gov or your online account. IRS.gov still has the full set of forms, tools, and guidance. Phone and in-person help also remain available if your question cannot be solved through self-service.

One important safety note: the IRS warns about look-alike apps, fake ads, and unsolicited texts or emails that claim to give you account access. The IRS will not ask for sensitive personal or financial details through an unsolicited text, email, or pop-up. If you are unsure, do not click. Use the verified link on IRS.gov to find the real app.
