Never Filed a Tax Return? You May Be Owed a Refund
If you skipped filing in past years, the IRS may be holding refund money with your name on it. Here is how to check and claim it, for free.

Why the IRS might owe you money
Many people do not file a tax return because they think they earned too little, or they just fell behind. But if you had taxes taken out of your paychecks, or you qualified for a refundable tax credit, you may have been owed a refund that you never claimed.
When you do not file, the IRS does not send that money automatically. It waits for you to file a return and ask for it. That means the money can sit there, unclaimed, for years.
This is your money. Checking for it and claiming it through the IRS is always free.
There is a time limit to claim it
Refunds do not wait forever. The law gives you a limited window to file a past-year return and still get your refund. After that window closes, the money is forfeited to the U.S. Treasury and you can no longer get it back.
Because of this deadline, it is worth checking your older years now instead of waiting. If you find you are owed money for a recent year, filing sooner protects your claim.
You can do this yourself, no paid help needed
You do not need to hire anyone to claim a refund you are owed. The official tools at IRS.gov are free to use.
Be careful with companies that promise to get your refund for a fee. The government path costs nothing. If someone pressures you or asks for money up front, slow down and go straight to the IRS instead.
Frequently asked questions
