More Money for School Meals: What It Means for Your Kids
USDA just announced new funding to put fresh, local food in school cafeterias. Here is how to make sure your kids get free or low-cost meals.

What just changed
On October 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced two big investments in school meals. One is more than $27 million in extra Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grants. The other is an additional $50 million in National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Equipment Assistance Grants.
The money helps schools buy local foods, work with nearby farmers, and upgrade kitchens with things like cold storage and stoves. In plain terms, it helps schools serve fresher meals to more kids.
USDA says the Farm to School funding brings total support in 2026 to more than $47 million across 149 projects. That is the largest annual investment in the program's history.
Who this helps
This funding goes to schools and state agencies, not directly to families. But it supports the same school meal programs that feed millions of children every day.
If your child goes to a public school, your school may offer free or low-cost breakfast and lunch through the National School Lunch Program. Many families qualify and do not know it.
You do not need to wait for this new funding to sign up. The meal programs are already running, and signing up is free.
How your kids can eat free or for less
Most schools let families apply for free or reduced-price meals at any time during the school year. Your income and household size decide if you qualify.
Some schools offer free meals to every student, with no application needed. Your school office can tell you which rule applies.
Applying is always free. You never need to pay anyone to sign your child up for school meals.
